Korean Perm in Seoul: What to Ask and Expect

The photo saved on your phone shows loose waves with lift at the root. In a Seoul salon the closest menu item is a Korean perm, usually listed as a digital or setting perm: a loose wave set once with heat-controlled rods. Whether your own flat, straight hair can do it is the real question.

What is a Korean perm called on a Seoul menu?

A Korean perm appears on Seoul menus under several names, and the name decides the result. Two in three perm bookings on our platform are for a digital or setting perm, the loose wave through the lengths. If your photo shows lift at the crown and little else, the item to look for is a root perm.

One caution about the photo itself. Many reference pictures were finished with a curling iron, and a perm alone will not reproduce them. Show the stylist your photo and ask what the perm gives you on an ordinary day, after washing and drying, before you agree to anything.

Will a Korean perm work on my hair?

Whether a Korean perm works on fine, bleached or non-Asian hair is decided at consultation, not by hair type alone. Juno Hair Myeongdong Branch No.4 states on its listing that perm availability depends on hair condition and hair type. Tell the stylist about bleach, colour and any previous perm or straightening, and roughly when.

A careful stylist may say no. Travellers describe Seoul salons declining hair judged too fine or too processed to hold a wave, and that refusal is worth more than a perm that drops in a week. How long does a Korean perm last?

No salon on our platform states how long a wave perm lasts, so this guide does not give a figure. What we have is what guests wrote. "Such nice natural waves that held up for my whole trip," one wrote after a perm at ARXTU Hair. Every perm review on our platform so far gives five stars, from a small sample of guests who chose to write.

A Korean perm shortens styling rather than ending it. Accounts from people who have had one agree that the wave still needs drying into shape and usually a little product, and that a perm does not turn hair into wash-and-go. Ask the stylist to show you the drying method before you leave the chair.

How much does a Korean perm cost in Seoul?

A digital or setting perm is listed from $87 to $252 on our platform and takes two and a half to four hours, depending on the salon and hair length. Several listings state that long hair or hair condition can add to the price. Read that line on the listing before you book, and confirm the total at consultation.

Our guests plan around the time it takes. Just over half of perm appointments start before noon and two in three fall on a weekday, which keeps the afternoon and the weekend free. Half are booked a week or more ahead, and half include a second service, most often a cut.

Do Korean perms damage hair?

A Korean perm is a chemical and heat process, and no salon on our platform claims it leaves hair unchanged. Avenue Juno's listing says hair condition is assessed before any solution goes on, and one guest wrote that 20u Hair Salon assessed the damage in their hair first. Raise bleached or previously permed hair before you book.

What is the difference between a Korean perm and a regular perm?

A Korean perm usually means a digital or setting perm, which sets the wave with heat-controlled rods as well as perm solution and aims for a loose wave rather than a tight curl. Avenue Juno lists both kinds separately: a Women Basic Design Perm at $180 and a Wavy Perm (Setting / Digital) at $252. The technique is also offered outside Korea.

Can men get a Korean perm in Seoul?

Yes, and a men's perm is a standard menu line in Seoul rather than a special request.
